Skin Care for Men 101: the Essentials

We started with Anti-Aging Tips for Men, stating that “men want skin care to be really simple and easy.” From there, we started our Skin Care for Men 101 series. We’ve already tackled proper shaving preparation and technique, but we forgot a few things.

In another previous post on simplifying your skin care routine, we suggested that you invest in the essentials. We want to expound on that idea.

To take care of your skin, your two most important tasks are cleaning and protecting your skin. With that in mind, you should need only two different skin care products.

Clean up

As you go about your everyday tasks, oil or sebum, dead skin cells, dirt, bacteria, and other impurities start building up on your skin. All this buildup can block your pores and irritate your skin, so it’s important to clean up regularly. We suggest washing up twice a day.

We suggest washing up every night with Diana Stalder Facial Wash to rid your skin of impurities that build up during the day. We’ve got several suggestions on how to wash your face too, if you’d like to give that a read.

When else should you wash? We recommend washing up in the morning to prepare your skin for the rest of the day, and also to help you wake up. If you follow our tips and stay clean at night, it’s ok to wash with just water. This helps avoid stripping your skin of essential oils.

Protect yourself

There’s no getting around it – the sun can damage your skin. This is why you need to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

When you need to get out in the sun, a generous application of Diana Stalder Sunblock Gel will do wonders to keep your skin protected. Covering up with pants and long sleeves will also go a long way. Of course, staying in the shade will work too.

If you really have to get out in the sun, it’s best to do so early in the morning when the sun’s rays aren’t quite as intense as during the rest of the day.

These tips should help you clean and protect your skin, but we suggest going a bit further than just this. Just these two things should keep your skin pretty healthy, but you can still do more. Here are a few other steps you can take.

Moisturize

As long as you maintain a healthy diet and avoid skin damaging habits, your skin’s natural oils should help keep your skin naturally moist. It wouldn’t hurt to give your skin a hand though. Regularly applying Diana Stalder Skin Moisturizing Lotion should keep your skin healthy, especially since it also does double duty as a 30 SPF sunscreen.

Exfoliate

As we mentioned earlier, oil, dead skin cells, dirt, bacteria, and other impurities accumulate on your skin. Regular washing helps keep this from building up, but sometimes it isn’t enough. This is why you should also exfoliate.

Just like washing does, exfoliating removes these impurities, but it does so a bit more aggressively. Exfoliating removes stubborn buildup that regular washing can’t remove. We recommend using a scrub like Diana Stalder Facial Scrub on a regular basis.

It’s important to remember though, that you shouldn’t exfoliate too often. As we mentioned, exfoliating is more aggressive than your regular wash, so exfoliating too often can strip your skin of essential oils, or even rub off healthy layers of skin.

We think that just about covers the essentials. Cleaning and protecting your skin are the two most important things, but moisturizing and exfoliating are important too. Do you think we missed out on anything? We’d like to know. Tell us in the comments below.
